Monroe native, Brother Verbon Muhammad is the Nation of Islam’s Student Minister of Mosque No. 99. On July 14, Brother Verbon Muhammad Sr., who is a District 5 Councilman in Monroe, Louisiana, was elected to serve as council president in a unanimous vote.
He will lead the council for a one-year term. He has also previously served on the Monroe School Board and currently also serves as president of the local NAACP branch.
According to reporting from the Monroe Free Press, Brother Verbon’s “election marks a historic milestone in local and national governance. Muhammad is one of only a handful of Nation of Islam members nationwide to hold elective office.
Furthermore, he is the only Nation of Islam member in the country to head a city legislative body with previous experience leading a local school system, having formerly served as President of the Monroe City School Board.”
According to DataUSA.com, as of 2024, Monroe had a population of 47,000 people and Blacks make up 59.8% of the population.
Brother Verbon was elected to city council in 2024 after capturing 65% of the votes (See The Final Call, Vol. 43 No. 34).
“I thank the Saviour Allah (God) Who came in the Person of Master Fard Muhammad, His Messiah the Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad and Their Servant among us the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan for the unanimous support of my colleagues to lead the city council. We will continue to work to make our community a decent and safe place to live,” he said.
