China strongly condemned the U.S. economic war against Cuba, in a note published by the nation’s State Council Information Office, also criticizing the unilateral imposition of punitive measures on our country, as well as Syria, Iran and Venezuela.
The statement made reference to resolutions approved in the UN General Assembly by an overwhelming majority of the world’s countries calling for an end to the criminal economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba. “Such acts, extremely inhumane, have caused enormous losses to the Cuban economy and society. The economic blockade is a massive, flagrant and unacceptable violation of the human rights of the Cuban people,” the communiqué insisted, according to Prensa Latina, adding, “Just like the virus, the blockade asphyxiates and kills, and must cease.”
The Chinese State Council also denounced the continuing existence of the prison at the U.S. Naval Base in Guantanamo, the only place on the island where torture and arbitrary detentions without trial take place.
The statement additionally noted the devastating impact of Washington’s sanctions on the economies of Venezuela and Syria, as well as Iran’s oil industry in particular, which led to the country’s inability to import necessary medical supplies, endangering the people’s basic rights to life and health.
