Whether envy or jealousy is the worse is not important to you if you are killed by a person acting from either emotion. The importance of the above definitions is that they give an idea of the foulness of envy and jealousy. There is another sense to the meaning of jealousy.
These have been the motives of many of those who have opposed the Messenger and the Nation of Islam from within and without. This has been the case from the earliest stages of the Messenger’s mission to the present. Envy was a prime factor in the outburst of hypocrisy, which led to the flight of Messenger Muhammad from his home and family in 1935. Of this the Bible’s story of Cain and Abel was a sign.
Cain hated his brother from envy. Abel was killed by Cain. However, the Messenger’s brother, Kollat, and the other hypocrites, were not successful in killing him (the Messenger).
A prophecy of the two is contained in the 5th chapter of the Holy Qur’an. God accepted from one brother what He did not accept from the other. The evil brother conceived murder in his heart for his brother. The good brother said, “If you stretch out your hand against me to kill me, I will not stretch out my hand to kill you. Surely I fear Allah, the Lord of the Worlds: I would rather that you should bear the sin against me and your own sin, thus you would be of the companions of the fire….”
The Holy Qur’an goes on to state that the evil brother’s mind made it easy to kill his brother. That is, he invented excuses to do what he intended. Then he did it. However, he was not able to conceal his crime forever.
So it was in the case of the Messenger and his brother Kollat. The latter wanted to head the Nation. Yet, he became a disbeliever in the very One from Whom such authority came, Master Fard Muhammad. He manifested his envious hatred of the Messenger in 1935. He and other hypocrites plotted against the Messenger, and he (the Messenger) was forced to flee his family and home.
One of the interesting points of this episode in the Messenger’s life is that he never tried to get revenge. In this respect the history of Joseph and his reactions to his brothers comes to mind. Despite the fact that his brothers tried to kill him, sold him to others, his was a forgiving spirit when they repented, which occurred when he was in power over them. That too is a sign of the present Messenger, the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. There were, and are yet, Black brothers who would like the place of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. Among them are those, who like Saul, may be popular with many people (or potentially so, because of policies and a style more agreeable to the “establishment”). Saul was the choice of the people who were not with God in their hearts. David, though not as outwardly imposing as Saul, was God’s choice.
Saul became envious of David. He became so infected by the poison of his envy he became insane. He wanted to keep his position with the people, even though God rejected him. Even when David was in position to kill Saul, he didn’t. Saul eventually met his well bought doom.
So it is with the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. The very spirit of the heart of this world’s ways are at war with the Lord of creation. The Messenger represents the Lord. Thus it is natural that he be rejected by those in love with this world. Those in, or who aspire to, leadership in this world, will oppose the Messenger. Many of them have, like Saul, become so envious of the Messenger’s success that they seek ways to harm his work or outright kill him.
The Messenger has been, and is, envied for his wisdom, his position with Allah, and for his few material possessions.
Consider this: It is written in John there came a time when in certain positions of authority, became so alarmed at Jesus’ success, that in private it is recorded that they said:
“What are we going to do?’ They asked each other. ‘For’ this man certainly does miracles. If we let him alone the whole nation will follow him …” John 11:47-48.
So, from that time on, they plotted his death, as we read in verse 53. And in the 19th verse of the next chapter, they said in private that … “the whole world has gone after him!”
It is very interesting to notice that many Muslims scholars see in these secret plottings, the plots against the life of Muhammad of Arabia. He escaped and fled to Medina. Thus began an era so significant, that they date their calendar from that time. This is of great significance.
So we read in Matthew 26:4 that they:
“…consulted that they might take Jesus by subtly, and kill him.”
Pilate thought to himself, according to the gospels, that this man, Jesus, who stood before him, was a victim of the envious. So it is with the Honorable Elijah Muhammad today. There are those who even now plot his death, out of envy. If you wonder if this writer knows them, the answer is no. But they do.
And so does Master Fard Muhammad.
Seldom has the Messenger publicly commented on the envy of his opponents. Once in writing of the prophesied reaction of many of our people to him, as recorded in the Holy Qur’an and Bible, he wrote:
“So they will scorn the meanings of it by one of them whose meanings have been taught to him by God, Almighty–that the scripture may be fulfilled; that He would send a teacher or preacher to us, the Lost and Found people; and raise him up from among us. Abraham and his son, Ishmael, according to the Qur’an, also prayed to Allah (God) that He might raise up an Apostle from among the Lost-Found mentally dead people. And, to teach him the knowledge of the Book (Bible) and the Wisdom (Holy Qur’an), that he may teach others of his people the meanings of what they read out of the Bible and Qur’an.”
