Chess players from all across the globe descended on Detroit, Michigan, on Feb. 20 to engage in mental strategy at The National Speed Chess Championships of the Nation of Islam.
The tournament took place during the 2026 Saviours’ Day Convention weekend, where Student Minister Daniel Muhammad of Chicago, Illinois, helped organize this epic and record-breaking event. More than just an organizer, Brother Daniel is one of the very few Black National Chess Masters, certified by The United States Chess Federation.
This event attracted nearly 50 of the brightest and most brilliant minds of the Nation of Islam. With a special guest appearance by Student National Secretary and member of the Shura Executive Council Sa’ad Alim Muhammad, this tournament was nothing but fun times, alongside intense battles.
Each round consisted of a “Double Round Robin,” in which each player had the opportunity to play with both black and white pieces. With the time control of 10 minutes per game with a three-second delay, those who wanted to win had to maintain sharp calculations.
Good decision-making, and near-perfect time management. With the pressure of the chess clock, players could be seen going through an emotional roller coaster as they fought diligently to stay focused and secure the victory.

This year’s top performers were as follows:
Hailing from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with a score of 8/10, Brother Anthony Muhammad secured the third place, bronze medal. This was an improvement from his performance two years ago, showing that he is constantly improving and becoming a serious championship contender.
The second-place, silver medal winner with a score of 8.5/10, was a surprise to the many adults who were being introduced to him the first time. Brother Khabir Muhammad from North Carolina, is a rising star and child prodigy.
He trained under Student Minister Daniel Muhammad who formerly taught the chess program at Asiatic Minds Online School, led by Sister Sherrie Muhammad. Brother Khabir is now being trained by National Master Dominic Myers, who is another one of the few Black Chess Masters in the country.
Last but not least, this year’s 2026 Saviours’ Day Speed Chess Champion was Brother Malachi Muhammad, from Covington, Georgia. Growing up and attending Muhammad University of Islam in Chicago, he was a member of the M.U.I. chess team led by Brother Kareem Abdullah.
Winning back then, in his younger years, has carried over into his adult years as well. He finished the tournament with a near-perfect score, only after achieving a draw with Brother Khabir, as they battled it out for the top spot. Finishing with a score of 9.5/10, we say congratulations to this year’s gold medalist and champion, Brother Malachi Muhammad.
Congratulations to all the competitors and we look forward to who will reign supreme at next year’s National Speed Chess Championships 2027, if it be the will of Allah (God).
