LOS ANGELES—Muslim leaders, educators, and advocates were honored by Los Angeles during the Muslim Heritage Month celebration. A special event held July 18, recognized outstanding leaders in the community and was held at The District by GS, owned by Tyrei Lacy.
The gathering featured special guest speaker Jose Ugarte Peña (candidate for L.A. City Council). Coordinated by longtime community activist Najee Ali of Project Islamic H.O.P.E., the event stood as a powerful demonstration of Muslim unity within the Los Angeles community.
Dr. Azizah Ali (principal, Islah Academy), Mahomed Khan (community peace activist), and Renee Mustafa (recognized for community advocacy, including providing wholesome meals to family, friends and community) were presented with Community Service Awards.
While Nation of Islam Western Regional Student Minister Abdul Malik Sayyid Muhammad received the Imam Warith Deen Mohammed Lifetime Achievement Award.
Student Min. Abdul Malik Sayyid expressed gratitude for being awarded. “I really appreciate Muslim Heritage Month. This is beautiful for me, to be recognized by the Muslim Heritage Committee,” he told The Final Call. “I’m just a tool who’s allowed Allah (God) to use me. I wouldn’t know what to do if I didn’t submit to Him,” he added.
Project Islamic HOPE and the city of Los Angeles hosted the inaugural Muslim Heritage Month Celebration on July 30, 2014, which recognizes, honors, and celebrates Muslim leaders and organizations in the city for their contributions.
