NEW YORK— Harlem’s renaissance is commemorating its 100th anniversary as music, art, dance and fashion defined the new era for Black people in the 1920s.
Beauty, glamour and a rich tapestry of fashion and history is set to hit the runways in Harlem at the 5th Annual International Modest Fashion weekend show and awards ceremony at the newly built Harlem Renaissance Hotel on September 27, hosted by internationally known designer Carmen Muhammad. She will bring her Al-Nisa clothing line to the Black Mecca along with other Black modest fashion designers and models. “We’re creating our own paradigm representing modest fashion,” stated Sister Carmen Muhammad.

An evening of fanfare with music and special recognition to the Grandassa Models, who were the first to bring the mantra “Black is Beautiful” with the style, the dress, hair and sophistication to the Black Power movement of the 1960s, will be featured. There will be a night to honor and recognize community leaders.
Awardees include Nation of Islam Student Regional Minister Arthur Muhammad and Student Regional M.G.T. and G.C.C. Captain Johnna Muhammad from Mosque No. 7 for their leadership and many years of commitment to the community; Queen Afua, world renowned author and holistic health practitioner; and Rev. Dr. Kevin Johnson, senior pastor of the historic Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem. It will be a night you don’t want to miss. For more information and tickets, visit www.harlemmfw.com.
