“And certainly We gave Moses nine clear signs; so ask the Children of Israel. When he came to them, Pharaoh said to him: Surely I deem thee, O Moses, to be one bewitched. He said: Truly thou knowest that none but the Lord of the heavens and the earth has sent these as clear proofs; and surely I believe thee, O Pharaoh, to be lost. So he desired to scare them from the land, but We drowned him and those with him, all together;” –Holy Qur’an, Surah 17, verses 101-103
In preparation for next week’s article, which will focus on further insights of outstanding persons who make up the society of Maoridom and New Zealand society, I am submitting a photographic collage covering part of a collection of the Elders representing a small part of the Maori genealogy.
This display also includes the traditional warrior positions, called haka. The performers are wearing tattoos and designs of their ancestors. The most prominent design that appears in the repeated pattern motifs inherited by the Maori Nation is called koru or fern frond. This is how it is described:
“The koru reflects the nurturing relationship found in nature, whereby the older, more mature fern shelters the younger frond in the center, from the elements such as rain and wind. This then can be translated to the relationship between two people, such as a marriage, illustrating growth and new life. More intricate koru also symbolizes the universe as a whole. The koru is also a symbol of peace and tranquility and, because of the intricacy of the carving, was highly prized by Maori.”
“And We said to the Children of Israel after him: Abide in the land. But when the latter promise came, We brought you all rolled up. And with truth have We revealed it, and with truth did it come. And We have not sent thee but as a giver of good news and as a warner.” –Holy Qur’an, Surah 17, verses 104, 105
