CHICAGO—As tens of thousands of people participated in May Day protests around the U.S. and abroad, Chicagoans were among the chorus calling for change. According to estimates, 6,000-8,000 people attended a march and rally that started in Union Park and ended at Daley Plaza on May 1. The protests focused on several issues, including immigration protections, labor rights, fair wages, rising economic costs and anti-war efforts. Chicago Public School Teachers and students were also among the participants.

May Day is a global demonstration for labor rights and worker solidarity and started from the 1886 Chicago campaign for an eight-hour workday.

Mayor Brandon Johnson also participated. “Shout-out to all of the students in our Chicago Public Schools and our educators who have declared this day of civic action,” Mayor Brandon Johnson said, reported Block Club Chicago. “The labor movement is in good hands because we have students across this city that are raising awareness of what justice looks like, not just in Chicago but all over the world.”—The Final Call
