HOMER, La.—The Holy Qur’an, which is the Islamic book of scripture, teaches us that success does not depend on numbers.
In Homer, Louisiana, which is the seat of Claiborne Parish, the brothers and sisters of the Nation of Islam’s Muhammad Study Circle of Homer are working toward becoming an official Study Group. Homer, which is located in northern Louisiana and has a population of 2,800, falls under the nearest mosque, which is Muhammad Mosque No. 99 of Monroe.
For the past 3 years, Student Brother William X and the F.O.I. (men of the Nation of Islam) have been working diligently with Homer High School Administrators to bring the Nation of Islam’s presence to the public school system. The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad taught that, “Education is the torchlight of civilization.”
As a group, the believers decided to award a $300 Scholarship Fund to a deserving high school graduate this year. Requirements included that the student must have a 3.0 GPA, must be a high school senior, must have already applied to a college or university, and have demonstrated community leadership skills.
Upon review, there was a young sister’s essay that stood out. This student worked a part time job and maintained 4.0 GPA. That is phenomenal. She also volunteers her time in school and in the community. The Homer Study Circle chose a bright start student for “The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad Scholarship Award!” Sister Hayden Watts of Lincoln Prep High School was this year’s award recipient.
