SAVANNAH, Georgia—The National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), the Black Press of America, convened its 2025 national convention in Savannah, Georgia, commemorating its 198th anniversary.

NNPA is a trade association of more than 200 Black-owned newspapers from around the United States of which The Final Call is a member. This year’s convention was held June 25-28 with the theme, “Engaging Black America: Empowerment, Justice and Prosperity.”

In addition to informative workshops and presentations, the weekend included the highly anticipated NNPA Fund Messenger Awards presentations for excellence in journalism and business.

Awards are based on several categories including reporting, layout/design, social media and more. The Final Call was honored with a third-place award in the category of Faith and Religion , for the articles:

“The light of Islam shines in Detroit,” by National Correspondent Charlene Muhammad and “Building our relationship with Allah through the Holy Qur’an workshop focuses on changing our personal experiences,” by Contributing Writer Shawntell Muhammad. Judging in this category was based on layout, photos and comprehensiveness of stories.
