STONE MOUNTAIN, Georgia—Muhammad University (M.U.I.) of Islam New York’s alumni, former faculty and staff, spent a weekend in Stone Mountain, Georgia, fondly reminiscing on their old school days. The Alumni Board and Reunion Planning Committee hosted a class reunion held Sept. 6-8. The reunion included a meet and greet, a park day and Sunday brunch.
The Honorable Elijah Muhammad, Eternal Leader of the Nation of Islam, established Muhammad University of Islam, an independent school system, in 1934 in Detroit.
His National Representative, the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan, played a pivotal role in the history of M.U.I. New York. The Honorable Elijah Muhammad appointed Minister Farrakhan as minister of then Temple No. 7 in New York City in 1965, who headed the mosque until 1975.
M.U.I. New York grew under the spiritual guidance and direction of Minister Farrakhan. He gave constant spiritual guidance and direction of the school’s faculty and staff through a session held every Tuesday and taught them what it means to teach Muhammad’s children.
Alumni from the 1960s and 1970s pointed out how the school not only saved their lives by teaching them Islam, but also the superior quality of education they gained. They remembered being taught advanced mathematical lessons in fourth and fifth grade, and they reflected on the discipline the school gave them to live an upright life.
Mother Khadijah Farrakhan, wife of Minister Farrakhan, attended the reunion, accompanied by her daughters, Sister Maria Farrakhan, Sister Donna Farrakhan, Sister Fatimah Farrakhan, Sister Khallada Farrakhan, sons, Student Supreme Captain Mustapha Farrakhan, and Brother Abnar Farrakhan, and her sister-in-law, Sister Medina Farrakhan, former wife of Minister Farrakhan’s late older brother, Alvan Farrakhan.
