CHICAGO—In a heartwarming celebration, the family of Ryan Harris gathered to commemorate her life at a park that bears her name. The July 28 event marked Ryan’s birth anniversary and served as a poignant reminder of the love and legacy she left behind.
The park, dedicated to her memory, stands as a testament to her impact on her community and the lives she touched during her short life.
Ryan was only 11 years old and was brutally beaten, raped and murdered in Chicago in 1998. At the time, the case garnered national attention when two young boys were wrongly accused of the crime.
The man who eventually admitted to the crime was sentenced to life in prison plus 30 years and died earlier this year. The park, located in the Englewood community, was renamed Ryan Harris Memorial Park in 1999.
Ryan was more than just an individual; she was a beacon of joy and inspiration for those who knew her. Born into a loving family, Ryan exhibited remarkable qualities from an early age.
Her infectious laughter, boundless curiosity, and compassionate nature endeared her to friends and family. As she grew, so did her interests as she was passionate about sports, particularly soccer, and loved spending time outdoors.
Rather than allowing grief to overshadow their memories of her, Ryan’s family and friends choose to celebrate her life by creating lasting tributes to keep her memory alive.
The park named after Ryan serves as a recreational space for families and a memorial for those who wish to honor her legacy. Located in the heart of the community on 67th and Lowe where she lived and played, the park features playgrounds, picnic areas, and the elements that reflect Ryan’s love for outdoor activities.
The dedication ceremony for the park was filled with heartfelt remarks from family members and community leaders. Family members organized various activities in the park that reflected her interests and as dusk fell over the park, lanterns were lit in her memory.
