CHICAGO—Rev. Dr. Frederick D. Haynes III, 63, who took over leadership of Rainbow PUSH as president and CEO resigned on April 16. Rainbow PUSH is the Rev. Jesse Jackson’s longtime civil rights organization. Rev. Jackson retired in July of 2023

Rev. Haynes III released a statement regarding his decision to step down, just months after he took the helm earlier this year after being appointed last year. The resignation came as a surprise to many.

“After a time of prayer and consultation, I felt it was best to step down as president and CEO of Rainbow PUSH,” his statement read in part. “I am forever honored that the Rev. Jackson graciously considered me worthy of following him as president of the organization that he founded.”

In a statement released April 16, Rev. Jackson said the organization and Rev. Haynes would remain “partners in the fight for peace, civil rights and economic justice.”
