(FinalCall.com) – As a highly anticipated national fundraiser for Women in Support of the Million Man March featuring Min. Louis Farrakhan approaches, the group is not letting a lawsuit dampen its spirit or stop its near 17-year history and mission to provide effective, culturally relevant educational and social programs to the Black community.
Founded in 1995 and inspired by the historic Million Man March, WISOMMM is a nonprofit community-based organization in Newark, N.J. The U.S. Department of Justice filed a civil lawsuit against WISOMMM, and its founder Fredrica Bey, a long time and well respected activist.
WISOMMM is holding a three-day event May 3-5 to raise money for the group’s legal defense fund and resolve charges the group calls “egregious.”

Min. Farrakhan, a supporter of the group since its founding, will make two public appearances to address the allegations. All events will take place on the grounds of the WISOMMM property in the heart of Newark’s Lincoln Park District on prime real estate near downtown.
It includes a former Second Presbyterian Church, a 65,000 sq. ft. edifice that houses the group’s holistic preschool center, the African Educational and Cultural Resource Center and regulation size gymnasium. WISOMMM acquired the property in 2005. Another property previously the group owns on the same block houses the Adelaide L. Sanford Charter School, which instructs using an African-centered classical education for liberation.
In 2005 the group received a federal grant from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Congressional Earmark’s Program to establish the Boycott Crime Campaign and develop programs to address crime and violence in the community. In a civil suit fi led January 2012 the Justice Department is making erroneous allegations about how the grant funds were used, according to Ms. Bey.
“The Minister’s appearances are designed specifically to raise money for WISOMMM’s Legal Defense Fund, so that the organization may resolve the issues associated with the complaint, and continue to offer its outstanding educational services and life-affirming community programs to the children, families, and residents of Newark,” said the group in a press release.
