(FinalCall.com) – In recent days, President Obama has been barraged with an assortment of vicious verbal assaults and accusations of moving against the best interests of the country. And there is no end in sight to the slights, threats and outright disrespect that the first Black president has suffered.
Aimed at the president were warnings from conservative rocker and gun enthusiast Ted Nugent that this time next year he will either be in prison or dead if Mr. Obama is reelected; a Catholic bishop urging parishioners to vote against the president and declaring the president was on a path similar to Adolph Hitler in targeting Christians; a leader of the Southern Baptist Convention accusing the president of using race to shore up his reelection bid and a member of Congress blasting the president for “distorting” the truth to divide the country.
Speaking to the National Rifle Association convention in St. Louis, Mr. Nugent declared, “If Barack Obama becomes the president in November again, I will either be dead or in jail by this time next year.” After the word got out, the Secret Service met with Mr. Nugent about a week later. Mr. Nugent declared April 20 that the meeting went very well and tweeted his respect for law enforcement officers and the Secret Service. Mr. Nugent made his initial anti-Obama remarks in a rousing endorsement of likely GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney. “We need to ride into that battlefield and chop their heads off in November,” Mr. Nugent told the gathering of gun rights advocates and conservatives regarding the upcoming election.
“Remember that in past history other governments have tried to force Christians to huddle and hide only within the confines of their churches, like the first disciples locked up in the upper room,” said Bishop Daniel Jenky in an April 15 homily in Peoria, Ill. His point of contention was an ongoing discussion about coverage for contraceptives and whether Catholic or religious institutions should pay for contraception as part of health insurance packages.
“In the late 19th century, Bismarck waged his ‘Kulturkampf,’ a culture war, against the Roman Catholic Church, closing down every Catholic school and hospital, convent and monastery in Imperial Germany. Clemenceau, nicknamed ‘the priest eater,’ tried the same thing in France in the first decade of the 20th century,” said the bishop, according to media reports.
“Hitler and Stalin, at their better moments, would just barely tolerate some churches remaining open, but would not tolerate any competition with the state in education, social services, and health care,” the bishop continued. “In clear violation of our First Amendment rights, Barack Obama–with his radical, pro-abortion and extreme secularist agenda–now seems intent on following a similar path.”
Days later the church clarified that the remarks were an historical analysis about the danger of curtailing religious liberty.
Southern Baptist leader Richard Land apologized in a letter to the head of the predominantly White religious organization for “any hurt caused by explosive remarks accusing President Barack Obama and other Black leaders of exploiting Trayvon Martin’s death for political gain,” according to the Associated Press.
Mr. Land had previously accused the president of having “poured gasoline on the racialist fires” when he addressed the killing of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. He said President Obama and civil rights leaders Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton were using the tragedy “to try to gin up the Black vote for an African American president who is in deep, deep, deep trouble for re-election.” “Mr. Land, who is White, had also said he was confident that a vast majority of Southern Baptists agreed with him,” AP said.
In an April 19 appearance on Fox’s “On the Record” with Greta Van Susteren discussing trouble passing a federal budget, House Budget Committee Chair Paul Ryan, a Republican from Wisconsin, took his shot at the president. He accused the president of not working to reach a budget agreement. “I think what he is trying to do is divide the country in order to distract the country from his failed record, his failed policies,” said the congressman. “He can’t run on his record. It’s not a good one. Look at gas prices. Look at poverty rates. Look at the economy. And he hasn’t changed his tune. He has gone farther to the left. He hasn’t moderated his position or his philosophy. So his only choice left, from what we see from all these speeches he’s giving in campaign mode, is to divide the country in order to distract the country. That’s what I am saying. I’m not saying he’s lying. But he is dramatically distorting.”
Seems like the declarations of America’s New Non-Racial Era some three years ago were dramatic distortions. So now after the tears, hand-holding and hugs have come actual threats on the president’s life, shots fired that struck the White House, insults targeting his wife and children, a political movement devoted to his destruction and a Republican Party leader declaring the first job was to torpedo any chance for an Obama reelection.
So much for the “new Black,” “new ways of being Black,” and “Black-any-way-you-want-it.” It’s back to the bad old days of once a Negro, always a Negro and always outnumbered and always outgunned, as one author noted years ago.
The “euphoria” of the Obama election and calling it an indicator of racism’s death were pure fantasy and an attempt to escape a 400-year-old problem and 400-year-old legacy of slavery, suffering and death.
Mr. Obama doesn’t suffer because of who he is as an individual, he suffers for what he represents as a Black man who comes from a people despised and rejected in America. Since Black people are expendable, a Black president is expendable.
The hatred, disdain and paranoia about the president is the same paranoia that stalks Blacks shot and killed or tased by police officers and a six-year-old Black girl in Georgia who was handcuffed and taken to a police station for acting out. It is the reason why Trayvon Martin’s killer can get bail set at $150,000, an amount an accused criminal gets for trying to steal credit card numbers from ATMs.
The Honorable Elijah Muhammad teaches no man or woman can rise above the condition of their people. Since Black people are in a degraded condition, a Black president is fair game for disrespect and degradation.
But the real question is not for the president, nor his detractors, the real question is for Black people: Have we had enough?
Have we had enough of begging for acceptance and inclusion, have we had enough of rejection and oppression, have we had enough of self-hatred and self-inflicted wounds based on ignorance? Have we had enough of debasing and fooling ourselves?
Have we had enough to strike out on our own regardless to whom or what? Enough is enough–or it should be.
