(FinalCall.com) – New York Republican Peter King is consistent in efforts to smear and destroy the good work of the Nation of Islam. In the 1990s, he led a witch hunt that resulted in security companies privately owned by Muslims losing contracts to secure public housing. The real losers, however, were Blacks. As soon as the N.O.I. peacemakers departed, violence increased and lives were lost.
Now Rep. King is using already roundly condemned hearings to assault Islam in general and the Nation of Islam in particular. Though Muslims are known for reform and changing lives of those in prison, the congressman wants to tar the movement with ugly, unfounded charges of anti-Americanism and anti-Semitism. The lies surfaced in a June 15 congressional hearing on “The Threat of Muslim-American Radicalization in U.S. prisons.” Black congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas objected to the mischaracterizations and misplaced focus: “Are you familiar with Christian militants?” she asked an official with the N.Y. Department of Correction Services. “Can one might say that they might possibly want to undermine this country because right now the right for women to choose is a Constitutional right but people disagree with it but here is an individual trying to undermine the protections that are given to women? Would you suggest that might be compared to trying to undermine this country?” she asked.
Her point, and a point made in an earlier King hearing maligning Islam, was any legitimate probe would include all “radical” prison groups, including religious and White supremacist organizations.
›Rep. King, however, wants removal of “all written, audio, and video materials produced by the ‘Nation of Islam’ and Louis Farrakhan” from federal penal institutions. We urge the Justice Department and attorney general to reject this hateful, unfounded and politically-motivated assault on Muslims and religious freedom.
