(FinalCall.com) – The National Newspaper Publisher’s Association held its annual convention in Chicago June 22 -25. On June 23, the NNPA Merit Awards honored publishing and editorial excellence among the over 200 Black newspapers that make up the association.

Final Call columnist Abdul Akbar Muhammad, who is better known as simply “Bro. Akbar,” won the Emory O. Jackson Award for Best Column Writing for a piece titled “Reparations, The Tea Party and America’s Founding Fathers,” which appeared in a November 2010 edition of The Final Call. Congratulations to Bro. Akbar, who is also international representative for the Nation of Islam and a radio talk show host.

The Final Call also won second place for the Robert L. Vann Award given for best layout and design in the tabloid division. Judges looked at newspaper designs over several editions to decide which newspapers did the best job in presentation of content.
